Press corps organizations asked for legal procedure to be started for SETA (Politics, Economy and Society Research Fund)| which has published a tagging report.
PEN Turkey, Journalists’ Society of Turkey (TGC), , Journalists’ Union of Turkey (TGS), DİSK Basın-İş / Press Union, Writers Union of Turkey (TYS), Publishers Association of Turkey, Haber-Sen / News Union and CGD organized a joint press release under the banner of “It’s a crime for SETA to tag journalists”, saying “Turkey, taking place 157th in the 2019 World Freedom of the Press Index, is one of the countries in the world where most professional journalists are in prison. More than 10 thousand journalists have been left without a job”.
TGC President Turgay Olcayto has said that SETA did not make a serious research and putting journalists of Turkey working at prestigious agencies of the world on target, has directed charges against them.” Olcayto added that in an environment where journalists are consistently in danger of being sent to the court of justice, SETA has undertaking the task of MIT (National Intelligence Service) or the police.
PEN Turkey President Zeynep Oral has called attention to the fact that in accordance with this report, it’s also considered to be a crime to be concerned with problems of women, and to get in touch with HDP, a legal party in the Parliament. “The report deems it a crime to criticize the government, to say that there is corruption, that the country is in an economic crisis and to utter the fact that every month 30 women are being killed.”
As for the Writers’ Union of Turkey (TYS) President Adnan Özyalçıner, stating that SETA has openly committed an offense, he has emphasized that in the report the public is motivated to grudge and enmity.
