Dear PEN colleagues,

On 1st October 2012, prominent journalist and human rights defender Mam Sonando was handed down a twenty-year imprisonment sentence. PEN International believes Mam Sonando is targeted solely for exercising his universally-guaranteed right to freedom of expression, and last year issued a RAN action demanding his immediate and unconditional release. Please see here for PEN’s action.

The Writers in Prison Committee of PEN International is supporting the appeal issued by our colleagues from IFEX to send messages of hope to Mam Sonando. Please see the appeal below, or find it by following this link.

We ask our PEN Centres to send similar messages to Mam Sonando.

Thank you for your support,

Patricia Diaz

INTERNAL APPEAL – CAMBODIA

Send a message of hope to jailed Cambodian journalist Mam Sonando

22 February 2013

Dear IFEX members,

Send your online message of support to imprisoned Cambodian journalist and human rights defender Mam Sonando who is serving out a 20-year prison sentence for practicing his right to free expression. His conviction is believed to be linked to a Radio Beehive broadcast that accused the Royal Government of Cambodia of crimes against humanity. His next court appearance is 5 March.

The Cambodian Center for Human Rights will read all messages over the radio during weekly broadcasts for decision-makers to hear, which CCHR says is particularly prior to his appeal. They will also print and personally deliver the postcards to Mr. Sonando, who is 71 years old and whose health is deteriorating, in prison, to remind him “that people have not forgotten his cause,” says CCHR. Today, they distributed 10,000 copies of the postcard throughout Cambodia for people to sign.

But you can join them and sign a virtual postcard online here right now! Your message will go a long way in giving Mr. Sonando the moral support and strength needed to endure this unjust situation and demonstrate to the authorities the public's condemnation of the sentence.

"Even though I am incarcerated, in my heart I am free... I have done nothing wrong, therefore I will not hide."
- Mam Sonando from prison.

The action will close on 6 March 2013. Please send a message now!

Thank you for your support.
